Parental Abuse?

I understand the need to be frugal when you are raising a family, but c’mon mom and dad…  hand-me-downs sometimes just don’t work!

What the Heck?

I knew Istanbul was seeped in history, but did not expect to encounter this walking down the Istiklal Caddesi.

Behind the Scenes

Here’s a BTS video from a recent shoot for Purina One.  Thanks Renee and Beth for letting Jon have his camera in your face all day!

And thanks to Jon, Scott, Paul, Megan, Julie, Emily and everyone else on the crew for a fun, smooth shoot!

The Humane Society of Missouri

The Humane Society of Missouri is part of a joint effort to create the country’s first dog-fighting database. I volunteered to take some photographs for them, and in June the New York Times picked up the story and featured my image.

St. Louis Art Museum Collectors’ Circle

'Target Practice' © An-My Lê

I was lucky enough to be invited to participate in the St. Louis Art Museum Collectors’ Circle art-buying event recently. A group of St. Louis photography collectors came together to pick one of six images, funded by the collectors’ group, to contribute to the museum’s permanent photography collection. While Eric Lutz, the museum’s curator of prints, drawings and photographs, did a great sales job on all the pieces, the group narrowed it down to a vintage de Meyer (the first real fashion photographer) and a super cool An-My Lê piece.

The large scale An-My Lê took the final vote. The group found the juxtaposition of the surface of the aircraft carrier and the ocean’s horizon effective as well as the brilliant graphic-matching between the human figure and the targets they just filled with holes. All together this is an amazing moment that speaks volumes about our relationship with war, humanity and the environment.

I am grateful to have it in our community’s permanent collection.

It’s great to have so many connections on Facebook, but Amy Stein was my first. This is one of my favorites from her series “Domesticated”.

BP: If It Was My Home

This map shows the extent of the BP disaster and allows you to move the spill to different locations and see the impact. From If It Was My Home.

“An explosion on the BP operated Deepwater Horizon oil rig killed eleven crew members on April 20, 2010 sparking the greatest environmental disaster in United States history. In combination with the Texas City Refinery Explosion and the Prudohoe Bay Oil Spill, this marks the third serious incident involving BP in the United States in the last five years. Current estimates put the amount of oil being discharged from the broken well at above 1,050,000 US gallons per day! There are over 400 different species of animals living in the area affected by the spill. 253 sea turtles and 29 dolphins have been found dead within the spill area.” (NOAA)

What Can You Do?

* Talk. First, share this map with your friends so they can understand the impact as well. Next, write to your Representatives and Senators and share your feelings about this disaster.
* Think. The EPA is soliciting ideas for possible technology solutions to aid in the oil spill response efforts. Submit your idea. You can also visit the clever inventors over at GulfClean.org and help them build their crowdsourced technology for oil cleanup.
* Volunteer. Lousiana and Florida are both looking for volunteers to help in cleanup and prevention. If you have a boat and live or work on the gulf coast, you can participate in the Vessels of Opportunity program.
* Donate. The National Wildlife Foundation and Save Our Seabirds are accepting donations for coastal relief.

Wrong Place at the Wrong Time

This ought to teach me not to step on set when visiting a photographer’s studio…

Watch Katzman Shuffle

Regardless, it was a pleasure seeing Brian Kuhlmann’s Chicago studio and meeting his staff.
